On July 5, 2009, Uyghurs took to the streets of Urumchi, the regional capital of
East Turkestan (also known as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China) and
peacefully protested government inaction on the killing of two, but possibly several
dozen, Uyghur migrant workers by Han Chinese workers in a toy factory in Guangdong
province. Chinese security forces moved in and used extreme force to suppress and
disperse the protest. Eyewitness accounts provided to human rights organizations
and media indicated that security forces extrajudicially killed many Uyghurs.
Since the July 2009 events, the Chinese authorities have arbitrarily detained and
disappeared many Uyghurs, arbitrarily sentenced many Uyghurs to death after trials
plagued with politicization and lack of due process, and arbitrarily executed Uyghurs.
On the first anniversary of the July 5th tragedy, ensure that Uyghurs’ pain and
suffering are not forgotten. The Uyghurs desperately need your help and support.
Join in one of the many demonstrations that are being organized worldwide by the
World Uyghur Congress and/or its affiliate organizations on Monday, July 5th.
Show your support for Uyghurs’ basic human rights and freedoms.
The times and exact locations of the following demonstrations will be circulated
soon.
